My personal experience with Trans India

Delhi - Agra - Jaipur - Udaipur - Mumbai

Delhi

Visit the Jama Masjid, built in 1650; one of the largest mosques in India. Special focus during the tour of Old Delhi is Khari Baoli, a street known for Asia’s largest wholesale spice market selling a fragrant variety of spices, nuts, herbs and food products, such as rice and tea.

Gurudwara Bangla Sahib – is one of the important historical Gurudwara in Delhi and this shrine is the scene of constant devotional music, whose ethereal tones are relayed throughout the entire complex. Get a chance to volunteer at Gurudwara’s community kitchen, the Sikh uplifting concept that translates to ‘share and consume together.’

Agra

Taj Mahal – Built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal who died giving birth to their fourteenth child in 1631, the Taj Mahal is described by the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore as ‘a tear drop on the face of eternity’. Construction took 22 years and the Taj was completed in 1653 at a speculated cost of 3 million rupees, equivalent to around 70 million US Dollars today.

Jaipur

Amber (pronounced Amer) is at a distance of about 11 kilometres from Jaipur. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it was the bastion of the Kachwahas of Amber, until the capital was moved to the plains, to what is today Jaipur. The palace, located in craggy hills, is a beautiful melange of Hindu and Mughal styles. Made entirely of red sandstone and white marble, visitors are left spellbound by the magnificence of the palace that utilises carvings, precious stones and mirrors.

The City Palace in the centre of Jaipur took 4 years to complete. Tour the Palace by passing through the main entrance and begin by visiting the Mubarak Mahal, built in 1890 it houses the Textile and Costume Museum. Visit the Armoury then proceed through the Rajendra Pol gate into the main complex.

Jantar Mantar Observatory. Built between 1728 and 1734 on a grand scale, the 17 astronomical instruments were built in stone and marble. The collection, built by Jai Singh includes the large Samrat, a 27.4m high sundial accurate to 02 seconds!

Udaipur

The City Palace which towers over the lake. The City Palace over-looks Lake Pichola and houses an impressive museum that includes an outstanding collection of miniature paintings. The Jagdish Temple enshrines a black stone image of Lord Vishnu as Jagannath, Lord of the universe and Saheliyon ki bari is a small ornamental garden with fountains, stone elephants and a delightful lotus pool.

Mumbai

Elephanta Island, a heavily forested Island ten km from Bombay Harbour, the island was originally known as “Gharapuri" (City of forts). Captured in 1535 from the Sultan of Gujarat, the Portuguese, upon discovering the huge elephant sculptures and rock hewn caves renamed the island Elephanta. Carved during the Golden Age of the Guptas and inspired by the worship of Shiva, the many sculptures and wall panels are all beautifully executed.

The Gateway of India - a grand ceremonial arch built to commemorate the visit of King George IV; Mani Bhavan - where the father of our Nation resided for 15 years; the Marine drive and the Hanging gardens.
